You Shall Not Pass (0.31)¶
The Demonic Horde has a terrifying new master. This update introduces the Balrog — a towering fire demon that now leads the Demonic Horde — along with the multi-stage Infernal Summoning world event, a new Fire Dungeon region, a flexible multi-slot cosmetic system, and a craftable line of Balrog Statue collectibles.
The Balrog & the Demonic Horde¶
The Demonic Horde faction has been overhauled around its new champion.
- The Balrog is a new fire demon enemy that now appears among Demonic Horde packs at higher levels (level 10+), fighting as a powerful mini-boss alongside the existing demons.
- Cursed Balrog is the new Demonic Horde boss, replacing the old Demon Boss. It guards Demonic Horde encounters with a full suite of infernal abilities.
- Sheol Balrog is the elite Demonic Horde boss — a fiercer variant that headlines the new Infernal Summoning world event.
- The Sheol Balrog Arena — The Infernal Summoning world event takes place on its own dedicated arena, wreathed in fire and ember weather.
- The Fire Dungeon has been added to the Demonic Horde quest rotation, sending you into its fiery depths to face the horde.
- Charge the Crystal quests — Demonic Horde quests can now end in a new Demonic Summoning objective: charge a pair of summoning crystals by killing demons inside their rings — the tougher the demon, the faster the crystal charges — then summon and slay the Cursed Balrog to claim its horns.
- A Molten Drakonid faction option has been added to the late-game Arena rotation for more fiery variety.
Infernal Summoning World Event¶
A brand-new world event for up to 5 players, running every 2 hours (recommended levels 11–17). The Demonic Horde is trying to tear open a portal to summon the Sheol Balrog — and it is up to you to turn their ritual against them. The event runs from June 24th through July 20th.
This challenging multi-stage encounter builds to an epic showdown against the Sheol Balrog. We're leaving the stage-by-stage details out so players can discover the encounter for themselves — but expect to be tested every step of the way, with a fiery finale that rewards the determined.
Balrog Boss Abilities¶
The Cursed and Sheol Balrogs wield a devastating set of new attacks:
- Open Hell Portals / Open Abyssal Portals — The Balrog tears open infernal rifts that summon waves of demons to overwhelm the party.
- Infernal Leap — Leaps across the battlefield and crashes down in a blaze of fire, dealing heavy fire damage and stunning everyone in the impact zone (~2s).
- Inferno — Periodically scorches the ground around the Balrog, creating a fire zone that burns anyone who lingers in it.
- Dark Covenant — A dark pact ability that empowers the Balrog and its minions while binding nearby enemies so they cannot escape.
- Enraged — When gravely wounded, the Balrog flies into a rage, sharply increasing its damage, attack speed, and movement speed — and re-triggering as long as it stays low on health. Burst it down fast or finish it carefully.
Multi-Slot Cosmetic Skins¶
The skin system has been reworked so a single cosmetic can occupy multiple equipment slots at once (Armor, Helm, and Wing), applying a different visual to each.
- Wing skins are now a fully supported cosmetic slot.
- Full-body skins — The Balrog skin, for example, can be slotted into Armor, Helm, and Wing simultaneously for a complete transformation.
- Existing armor cosmetics now include matching helms. Sets such as Knight, Ogre, Ravenman, RedHorn, Barbarian, Yeti, and the various Clockwork/Steam Brigade skins now style both your armor and your head.
- Yeti skins reworked — The Yeti cosmetics have been consolidated and now apply across Armor and Helm together, with a cleaner unlock progression.
- Pet skins now work correctly, including non-blob pet skins, with their own dedicated skin slot.
- Pegasoid Steed wing skin — The Pegasoid Steed multiverse item gains a new utility: it can now be applied as a Wing skin.
- Attack-sound skins — Skins can now override your attack sound, so a cosmetic can fully reskin both the look and the sound of your attacks.
- The character customization screen now presents skins in a clearer dedicated panel.
The Balrog Blob Pet¶
A new Balrog Blob pet joins the game — a fiery demonic Blob with a potent set of demonic combat bonuses.
- Only 150 Balrog Blobs exist, available on nft.io or earned as a Twitch viewer drop during the event.
- Each Balrog Blob is infused with 15 ENJ, which can be extracted by melting it down.
- Grants Epic-rarity bonuses: +5% Magic Find, +5% Exp Gain, +5% Horn Drops, and +300 Fire Resist — extra resilience against the fires of the Infernal Summoning event.
Balrog Statues — New Craftable Collectibles¶
A new tier of on-chain Balrog Statue collectibles can be forged from demon spoils. Each statue grants a Demon Horn drop bonus and Renown, and unlocks the Balrog skin.
- Demon Horns now drop from specific Demonic Horde bosses — collect Large Horns to begin crafting.
- The crafting chain ascends through five tiers. From Intricate onward, each craft burns two of the previous statue (plus Gold, Legendary Infusions, and Gems), so higher tiers grow increasingly rare:
| Statue | Rarity | Horn Drop Bonus | Renown | Unlocks Skin | Skin Slots |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Empty Balrog Statue | — | — | — | (crafting base) | — |
| Simple Balrog Statue | Rare | +1% | +25 | Balrog | Armor |
| Intricate Balrog Statue | Epic | +2% | +50 | Balrog | Armor, Helm |
| Elegant Balrog Statue | Legendary | +4% | +100 | Balrog | Armor, Helm, Wing |
| Masterwork Balrog Statue | Artifact | +8% | +200 | Elite Balrog | Armor, Helm, Wing |
- Strictly limited supply. The Empty Balrog Statue is capped at 1,000 total on-chain, distributed three ways:
- 700 — Token pre-sale. Opens June 21st at 1:00 PM UTC at a base price of 40 ENJ per token, using the Advance Token Sales process — place an offer early (max 10 per wallet) and it is accepted automatically when the sale opens. If demand exceeds supply, offers are accepted by highest price, then most Imperial Sovereigns held, then earliest offer. Proceeds go to the Community Wallet, which funds ongoing player rewards.
- 250 — In-game crafting at the Etherforge from Large Horns, with an escalating cost and a lifetime cap of 8 per player (base recipe: 25 Large Horns, 100,000 Gold, 50 Legendary Infusions, 25 Gems).
- 50 — Twitch viewer drops earned while watching Etherscape streamers during the event.
- Because Intricate, Elegant, and Masterwork each require burning two of the previous tier, the supply tightens dramatically up the chain — capping the Masterwork Balrog Statue at just 125 in existence.
- Each statue unlocks the Balrog skin across more equipment slots as you climb the tiers — the Simple statue covers Armor, while the Elegant and Masterwork statues apply across Armor, Helm, and Wing for a full infernal transformation.
Other Changes & Quality of Life¶
- Boss health bar now stays fixed at the top of the screen whenever a boss is present on the map, so you always know the fight's progress.
- Fire border visual effects now appear on both the main view and the minimap during fiery events, clearly marking dangerous zones.
- Faster event development — Significant refactoring of the level- and world-event systems onto a shared step-machine, making it much quicker to author and add new in-level events going forward.
- Diminish stacking removed — The diminishing-returns stacking mechanic has been retired, and affected tokens have been converted off of it for simpler, more predictable bonuses.
- Streaming opened to everyone — Streaming features are now available to all players with this release; no whitelist is required.
- Gold Bars in crafting recipes — Crafting recipes automatically translate Gold costs into Gold Bars when the required amount exceeds 20M, keeping high-end recipes readable.
- Global crafting caps — Added explicit logic to enforce global crafting caps on specific recipes (such as the limited-supply Balrog Statues).
- Various world-event progress messages have been reworded to read more clearly.
- Numerous Balrog particle, animation, and visual-effects polish passes.
